How did they film Harry Potter?
As Harry Potter was a magical world, a large part of the set for Harry Potter had to be created in Studio. The series was filmed over 10 years at Leavesden studios, just outside of London in the UK. Most of the set still remains and Harry Potter is now an attraction open to the public.
You can see real sets from the movies like The Great Hall, Gringotts Bank, and Dumbledore’s office. Plus, check out drawings, small models, and props used in the films. You’ll also get to watch videos that show how computer tricks made the magic look real!

King’s Cross Station
Platforms 4 and 5 were used to film the Hogwarts Express scenes. There’s also a dedicated photo spot for the famed Platform 9¾, where fans can pose with a luggage trolley “disappearing” into the wall.
Leadenhall Market
A beautiful Victorian market in the City of London, it was used for exterior shots of Diagon Alley and the entrance to the Leaky Cauldron.
St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel
The exterior of this hotel, located next to King’s Cross, was used as the entrance to King’s Cross Station in the films.
Australia House
The grand interior of this building on Strand served as the interior for Gringotts Wizarding Bank.
Westminster Tube Station
Harry and Mr. Weasley use this station when they travel to the Ministry of Magic in “Order of the Phoenix.”
Millennium Bridge

Alnwick Castle is thought to be the most famous castle used as Hogwarts and the castle the set was based on. The Castle was used for exterior shots of Hogwarts, including the scenes where students learn to fly broomsticks.
- Durham Cathedral, Durham, England.
The cathedral’s cloisters were used for various scenes, including where Harry releases Hedwig the owl.
- Gloucester Cathedral, Gloucestershire, England
The cathedral’s cloisters were used to film various Hogwarts corridor scenes, including the sequences involving the words written in blood in “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.”
- Lacock Abbey, Wiltshire, England
Used for various interior shots, including classrooms and hallways.
- Goathland Station, North Yorkshire, England. Served as the Hogsmeade Station where the Hogwarts Express stops.
